Mental illness is often treated as a condition that is contagious and easily contracted through contact with affected individuals. Many people believe that interacting closely with the mentally ill is a sure way to catch their diseases. Those who maintain this mindset are afraid of being diagnosed and seem to think that they can avoid the issue by never getting evaluated. Mental illness exists in varying levels of severity; however, many disorders can progress quickly without proper treatment. Black people have suppressed generations of pain, sadness, fear, and anger. We’ve inherited our ancestors’ undiagnosed and untreated emotional and mental afflictions.
